Table/Floor Lamp from Vintage Royal Tichelaar Makkum—Hinomaru

€1,690.00

Hinomaru is a one-of-a-kind lamp lovingly handcrafted from an unique vintage overhanging round red ball vase designed by famous Dutch interior and art director, Marcel Wanders for Royal Tichelaar Makkum (the oldest ceramic company in the Netherlands) circa 1980. The vase base is unique because the edge of it “hangs” over the furniture it is placed on, giving the visual impression of a completely round ball. We’ve named it Hinomaru, which means circle of the sun, because it resembles the red circular centre of the Japanese flag which has the same name.

The lampshade is made from a limited edition Japanese Sogara Yuzen print, in which a single image is hand-silk screened across the entire paper. These exquisite, high-end prints include metallic gold highlights and beautiful, bright colors. The scene depicted is of a garden in full bloom with gorgeous flowers, trees, water features and birds including auspicious cranes and peacocks. It looks gorgeous both in the daytime and at night with the light illuminating it from the inside.

There is a small chip on the inside overhang of the lamp base, but it is not visible when displayed.

Much of the most beautiful modern Delftware comes from the Tichelaar factory in the quaint fishing village of Makkum. Preserving the centuries old tradition passed on by the 13 generations of Tichelaars, nearly all the production is still done by hand. Koninklijke Tichelaar (1572) is the oldest ceramics company in the Netherlands based in Makkum, Friesland. After initially producing bricks and tiles, the company has focused on traditional decorative pottery since 1890. In 1960, the company received the Royal predicate on the occasion of its 300th anniversary. Royal Tichelaar Makkum takes its long history seriously without resting on their laurels. They continue to experiment, bringing together classic craftsmanship, contemporary design and research for the future.
