Table Lamp from Raymond Chevalier/Charles Catteau Antique Boch Frères Keramis—Marmara

€2,900.00

Introducing Marmara, a one-of-a-kind lamp masterfully crafted from an antique Art Deco ceramic cloisonné vase, designed by Raymond Chevallier in the "Persian" or Ottoman (Iznik) style, produced at Boch Frères Keramis in La Louvière, Belgium during the Art Deco era.

Boch Frères studio, under the guidance of Chevallier's successor, Charles Catteau, is renowned for its vibrant ceramics of the early 20th century, drawing inspiration from Cubism, Japonisme, and nature. This lamp's base, adorned with the company's decor number D 69, showcases intricate Iznik patterns of floral medallions, foliage, and palmette motifs, signifying its creation before 1920.

A maximalist’s dream, we’ve paired it with a custom contemporary lampshade with a platinum inner lining, crafted from an exclusive Pierre Frey Paris fabric. This fabric, named Tabriz, flaunts a saz-style motif from the 16th-century Ottoman Empire, reimagined as a brocade with metallic-like weft threads.

“Boch Frères Keramis was founded in 1841 by Eugène and Victor Boch and their brother-in-law, Jean-Baptiste Nothomb, in La Louviere, Belgium. Decades later in 1906, French ceramicist Charles Catteau joined the company as artistic director, a position he held for 42 years. His signature Art Deco designs were influenced by Japonisme, Cubism, and abstraction of nature, and he was ultimately responsible for the company’s transition from producing utilitarian objects to esteemed works of art. Boch Frères Keramis closed down in 1985, and though they were acquired by other companies afterward, they closed permanently in 2009.” —from Artnet
