Table Lamp from Antique Delft Boch Frères Keramis Vase—Sakura

€2,900.00

Sakura, perhaps our most beautiful lamp to date (shhh don’t tell the others we have favourites). She is handcrafted from an antique Boch Frères Keramis vase (circa 1872-1900) from the “la Chambre des peintres hollandais” (The Dutch Painter’s Chamber) as indicated from the handwritten BFK mark on the bottom. Paired with a one-of-a-kind handmade gathered silk lampshade made from a vintage Indian sari.

Around 1874, in the light of the growing interest of collectors of old faience pieces, Victor Boch, of the newly founded Boch Frères Keramis in Belgium, recruited Dutch painters from Maastricht, including some who had already gained experience working in Delft potteries. These Dutch faience painters brought along their knowledge, experience and know-how with them. Thanks to their collaboration, the working methods of the past were rediscovered and applied to a different clay than was used by the original Delft ceramicists.

The luxury faience from Boch was decorated with hand-painted Delft decor, which became a specialty of the manufacturer under the name “la Chambre des peintres hollandaise” recognizable by a hand painted signature of the interlaced letters “B, F, K“ (Boch Frères Keramis) on the bottom of the pieces as seen on this vase, now lamp!

“Boch Frères Keramis was founded in 1841 by Eugène and Victor Boch and their brother-in-law, Jean-Baptiste Nothomb, in La Louviere, Belgium. Decades later in 1906, French ceramicist Charles Catteau joined the company as artistic director, a position he held for 42 years. His signature Art Deco designs were influenced by Japonisme, Cubism, and abstraction of nature, and he was ultimately responsible for the company’s transition from producing utilitarian objects to esteemed works of art. Boch Frères Keramis closed down in 1985, and though they were acquired by other companies afterward, they closed permanently in 2009.” —from Artnet
